FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Rescue organizations brought more than 20 breeds and all sizes of dogs to the Fort Worth Stockyards Saturday with hopes of finding them forever homes.

The Great Rescue Roundup had booths set up so rescuers could show off all of the adoptable dogs and discuss the different types to help potential adopters find the perfect match for their home and family.

Each of the participating rescue groups of the Great Rescue Roundup have seen an influx of dogs this past year being surrendered by owners and turned into shelters. Quite a few need special care, be it from heartworm treatment, life threatening illnesses, broken bones or old injuries left untreated.

The National Humane Society statics indicate that 6 to 8 million dogs and cats are turned into shelters each year; 3 to 4 million will be euthanized.

Rescue groups play a large part in pulling these unwanted pets into their programs and help save them from the cruel fate of abandonment, neglect, abuse and euthanization.
