COPPELL (AP) - Retail gasoline prices across Texas dropped 6 cents this week to settle at $1.98 per gallon.

AAA Texas on Thursday reported it's the first time since 2009 that the statewide average slipped below $2 per gallon.

Nationwide prices at the gas pump fell 7 cents this week, to reach an average $2.22 per gallon.

Texarkana has the cheapest gasoline in Texas this week at an average $1.91 per gallon. Drivers in Amarillo face the most expensive gasoline statewide at $2.06 per gallon.

Association experts say ample domestic supplies have kept down prices at the pump.

AAA officials say, barring any unanticipated disruptions in supply, that the national average this year could also fall below the $2 per gallon threshold for the first time since 2009.
