FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A Fort Worth family is mourning the loss of its newly-adopted puppy, after something horrible happened while they were away from home.

Phyllis and Jack Couturier had a neighbor check on their shelter pup, "shaggy" Saturday afternoon on Tulare Lane.

The 10-month old dog was lifeless on the couch after coming in through the doggie door after from the back yard.

"The doctor showed us the x-rays and told us that he'd been shot and it punctured his lung, gone through his abdomen, his liver and lodged by his spine and we were speechless," said Phyllis.

The dog ultimately had to be put down.

At this point, Fort Worth police are not investigating the case.
