FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Former TCU student Brennan Rodriguez has reached a plea deal for his role in the death of fellow college student Thomas "Ty" Boone Pickens. Pickens was the grandson of oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens.

Rodriguez, 23,  has been sentenced to 10 years deferred adjudication probation for injecting heroin into Pickens' arm, causing his death.

In exchange for his guilty plea to delivery of a controlled substance charges, prosecutors dismissed three other criminal charges, including murder, manslaughter, and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors say Pickens was at Rodriguez's Fort Worth apartment along with Rodriguez's cousin, on January, 29, 2013.  Rodriguez admitted to injecting Pickens with heroin and leaving with his cousin to buy more drugs.  When Rodriguez returned with his cousin to the apartment, he found Pickens passed out and sweating profusely.  They shook Pickens awake and gave him water and allowed him to return to sleep.  They tried to wake him hours later, but were not able to.  When they took him to a local hospital, Pickens was pronounced dead.

"This agreement was reached after considering all the facts and consulting with the family," said Prosecutor Kevin Rousseau. "No outcome can give them back their son, but hopefully with this plea, they can at least begin to heal."

Rodriguez will also serve 120 days in county jail, as part of his probation sentence.
