DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The annual Heart of Dallas Bowl game has a proud tradition of sharing proceeds from the game to local charities. This year's game with Illinois taking on Louisiana Tech is taking up a new cause.

On the day after Christmas the Heart of Dallas Bowl was able to extend the holiday spirit of giving by adding first responders and their families to the charitable causes who will benefit from the game.

While Jeff Noble roots for his son on the field, also on his mind is his son-in-law who wears a different kind of uniform.

"For the amount of money that they make, I mean they're out there night and day fighting crime and so forth, even like the firefighters. My son-in-law is a firefighter, so they risk their lives every day," Noble said

That's why he and other fans were happy to see first responders get the recognition they deserve at this year's Heart of Dallas Bowl.

Game organizers kept traditional charities in mind by donating $5000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Dallas and another $150,000 to the Heart of Dallas Foundation that will benefit food banks and homeless groups. Starting this year, charitable groups supporting first responders and their families will also receive proceeds from the game.

"These are the people that protect us at home, and what better way to say thank you than to have a bowl game tribute to them," the game's executive director, Brant Ringler said.

Zaxby's, the sponsor of the game, donated $1000 for every point scored in the first quarter and $2000 for every point scored in the second quarter for a total of $43,000 going to first responder groups.

"First responders, those guys put their lives on the line for what they do, so I think it's a great idea," Noble said.

Zaxby's will be promoting charitable donations on a national level, and game organizers are working with Dallas police, fire, and EMS to coordinate efforts with first responder groups throughout North Texas.
