STEPHENVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - Firefighters in Stephenville battled a blaze at the oldest house in the city early Wednesday. It happened just after midnight near the intersection of Washington Street and Shaphard Street.

Smoke and flames were showing when emergency crews first arrived at the scene. This took place at the Berry House, a historic home that was originally built in 1869. It is the oldest still-standing home in Stephenville.

Fire Chief Jimmy Chew said that most of the flames and smoke were confined to the home's attic. However, the flames did punch through the roof of the structure in one spot. There was heavy smoke and water damage, Chew said, but the home can be salvaged.

Nobody was injured during this incident.

This building also houses the Stephenville Historical Museum. Officials have not said if there was any damage to those exhibits.

Fire investigators are now trying to determine what might have sparked the blaze.
