FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Neighbors at the Woodbridge Apartments complex in east Fort Worth are being credited with saving the lives of residents on Monday morning, when fire broke out in the 500 block of Bobwhite Drive.
Fire officials said that the blaze began in an upstairs unit just before 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning, when many people were still sound asleep. The flames then quickly spread into the attic and through the rest of the apartment building.
Crews were able to get the flames extinguished in just about 15 minutes. But both fire and water damaged 16 apartment units, leaving at least 20 people without a home. One resident was treated for smoke inhalation.
Many people lost their belongings in the fire, but said that they are grateful to be alive.
Residents said that neighbors banged on doors and woke everybody up before firefighters even arrived at the complex, making sure that people got outside safely.
Steven Gunnels was one of those people who went door-to-door alerting his neighbors. "I beat on the door," he recalled later Monday. "That's where I fractured my hand, by beating on the door."
Gunnels said that he next plans to serve Thanksgiving dinner to the displaced residents, doing whatever he can to help them out. "I just did what I had to do," Gunnels added. "I just thought about the people, I thought about their welfare."
