EULESS (CBSDFW.COM) - Jorge Gonzalez's family has nothing nice to say about him.
"He was very violent. He was like… mean. He would try and fight and stuff," says his sister, Jennifer Gonzalez. "I was terrified of living with the same roof under him. After he hit me. I didn't want to live with him."
Police arrested Gonzalez, who has a lengthy criminal history, on Monday for public intoxication. He was released the next morning.
Euless Police Chief Micheal Brown says Gonzalez left the jail and went to Carr Park after stealing guns from a nearby home and hiding in wait for police.
"It is our belief based on the facts known to us… that the suspect took this position to ambush the responding officers," says Chief Brown.
Gonzalez's family says Officer David Hofer, who was shot and killed Tuesday, had been to their house at least three times.
"As soon as I see his picture I remember him right away," says Jennifer Gonzalez.
She says Officer Hofer saved them from a man they feard while trying to help all of them, including the man who eventually took his life.
"He got my brother… like he made sure everything was okay. He was like the best officer… he was cool. He was nice," says Jennifer Gonzalez.
