FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Social media giant Facebook is making a big announcement on Tuesday about a massive new internet hub located in north Fort Worth. This has been a well-guarded secret for several months, but the details are finally expected to be made public during a special event.
A huge tent is in place and the stage is set for the Tuesday announcement, where Facebook will break ground on a new data center. The company already has two other data centers in Oregon and North Carolina.
Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price said that this will bring in high-paying jobs and could open up the city's tech sector. The location in Oregon alone brought in nearly 700 jobs to that area. Fort Worth officials stated that at least 40 high-salary jobs will come with the new development.
There has already been much growth in north Fort Worth over the last several years -- from neighborhoods to hospitals to businesses. Other nearby cities -- including Roanoke -- also aim to cash in on the huge development, hoping that this might bring other tech companies to the Fort Worth area.
The Oregon location took five years to build and brought in $2 billion to the economy.
Local school districts speculated that the impact might not be immediate, but could come later after everything is built. The Fort Worth Independent School District explained that it often forms partnerships with companies like this, so the schools could gain financial resources, volunteers for events or even facility tours for students.
The groundbreaking is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Construction equipment is already at the location, and dirt has started flying at the 110-acre lot. Gov. Greg Abbott will be on hand to welcome the internet giant.
