FORT WORTH (CBS11) – The staff inside the emergency room at Texas Health Fort Worth is getting ready for a surge in patients through the Thanksgiving holiday.
Christy Daae, a registered nurse and the manager of the Emergency Department said things really pick up on Thanksgiving night into Friday morning.
"Inside here it's crazy busy," said Daae. "We take care of the sickest of the sick and those who are not so sick but still need to be here."
Medical experts say with so much food around, it's easy to give into indulgences that do no favors for your health.
They say the spike in patients is due to illnesses associated with too much eating and/or poor food choices that wreak havoc.
Dr. Dave Spear, an ER doctor at Texas Health Fort Worth said these illnesses can be very dangerous.
"We always wonder if someone is having a problem with overeating or could they be having a heart attack," said Dr. Spear.
Dr. Spear said many times the ER sees people with heart attacks during Thanksgiving and he attributes those cases to extra stressors, especially with other family members.
He said something as simple as controlling your food portions to avoiding confrontations with family, could help keep you from visiting an ER during the holiday.
