Drones All The Rage In Hobby Community

ALLEN (CBSDFW.COM) - Whether you know them as Drones or Quadcopters, the remote controlled flying objects have become very popular lately.

There popularity hasn't come without controversy from those who claim they are intrusive and believe they pose a danger.

Despite criticism over their use a group of Quadcopter enthusiasts are finding ways to use them for sport.

Jay McKibben of Allen runs a Quad hobbyist group that gather on the weekends to race them.

McKibben said, "I wanted to come out here and play and go fast", about why he started the group known as the "NE Dallas Speed Addicts".

According to McKibben, Quad racing interest is increasing within the hobby community and turning into a sport.

He added, "You've got the competitive nature, you've got smack talking that kind of thing." about the atmosphere with those who show up on the weekend at designated parks in Allen.

The contestants race each other in open air obstacle courses.

McKibben assured they aren't doing anything illegal or dangerous - just having "responsible fun" with what appears to be the new craze with RC enthusiasts.
