Drainage Fix Causes Problems For Carrollton Neighborhood

CARROLLTON (CBSDFW.COM) - It's supposed to be the fix to a drainage problem. Instead, residents in one Carrollton neighborhood have a curb nearly as tall as a tire, and they want the city to fix it before someone gets hurt.

Jaimee Roque's three children run and ride their bikes in front of their home - but now their play area has a giant obstacle in it.

"They've come out and they've built this asphalt to the point that it's up to my 5-year-old's hips," says Roque.

It was a supposed solution to a long-time drainage issue. There's no nearby sewer drain, and flooding has been rampant. But this, neighbors say, wasn't the answer.

"You have to park exactly lined up with the ramp or you can't get out of your car. If there's someone in your back seat, they can't get out, and you can't have the person in the front seat get out," Roque says.

But the greatest worry is for the children here.

"I'm concerned that if they try to get out of the car and they don't go onto the ramp, they're going to tumble and fall. They could break a foot, break a leg, sprain something."

"I was just so disgusted, and also worried," says another neighbor, Sharon Yetman. "Very worried for cars that could impale or come racing down here and just roll into the yards."
Since it was put in Friday, it's already started to crumble. Neighbors hope the city will return, install a sewer drain and curb this tall curb.

"We were flabbergasted," says Roque.

"I feel like we're ignored, and it's just a real crime," says Yetman.

A city spokesperson tells CBS 11 that they are aware of the situation, but it was done as a temporary fix. They say they plan to come out this week and make any necessary adjustments.
