HUNTSVILLE (KRLD) -- A dog that was tortured with hot grease has pulled through against the odds and will soon start training as a service dog.
Mercy was rescued less than two weeks ago after a group of kids poured burning grease on her, leaving burns across her body. Melissa Caposello, President of DFW Canine Rescue, says Mercy's story began when they got a call from a humane society in Huntsville.
"She was in a horrible state of condition and she ended up having every parasite a dog can get -- severe burns," said Caposello. "She's doing good. She's perked up. We do not know how she's made it through this."
Caposello says that even the vet was uncertain if Mercy could fully recover from her injuries. She says donations are still need to aid with Mercy's recovery.
"We have some big plans for her," said Caposell. "We would like to, when she gets healthy, test her to see if she will pass her service dog program...I think she will be able to reach people on a whole other level."
DFW Canine Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing dog rescue and service dog training to veterans affected by PTSD and children with mobility issues.
