DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – Dallas ISD trustees are set to make a big decision Thursday night that could impact thousands of DISD students and teachers.

School board members are scheduled to vote on a 148 million dollar plan to fix the facility issues at nine campuses and begin to expand pre-K.

If it passes, it would give the district a head start before a $1.5 billion bond package goes to voters in November at the earliest.

Mother of two Lakewood Elementary students, Ashley Carroll, supports the plan. A few weeks ago, the lives of her sons Owen and Hank were put in jeopardy.

"I am angry about it because there are things that happened before this. It should have been addressed a long time ago."

Carroll is talking about the gas leak earlier this month that shutdown Lakewood and forced an evacuation. Owen and Hank were inside, and Owen got sick.

"I just felt nauseous. I felt like I wanted to go to bed," said the third grader.

Built in 1951, Lakewood Elementary is one of the several DISD schools in need of upgrades. The schools are not only old, but overcrowded.

"It's definitely worrisome and we've talked about possible private schools if things get worse," said Carroll.

Owen says while he's always felt safe while at school, he's hoping something changes.

"I just don't want this stuff happening again because I really wasn't feeling well."
