DISD May Expand Early Education Programs
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Three-year-olds going to school in Dallas?
It could happen if the Dallas Independent School District expands its early education programs by reworking closed and under-utilized campuses.
"We need to be ready for the children, 3, 4 and 5 year old children, to get them ready academically and socially," said DISD trustee Lew Blackburn.
Trustee Blackburn is leading a campaign to reopen N.W. Harlee Elementary school as a Pre-K education center.
Mount Auburn School would also expand its early childhood enrollment, and a Montessori program would be added to another nearby campus.
"The majority of our students enter kindergarten 12-18 months behind where they need to be, so providing a solid foundation in early childhood with Pre-K is tremendously beneficial to the child and to the taxpayer on a long term basis," said DISD trustee Mike Morath.
Along with the early education proposals, trustees will also consider a plan to spend up to 15-million school district dollars on a downtown office building to serve as the new headquarters for DISD.
