NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) — Memorial Day is the one weekend where many folks take to the roads; but with so many of them closed due to severe flooding in our region, authorities are discouraging extensive driving.

Texas Department of Transportation officials say it's best to not travel in these hazardous conditions. They are continuing to encourage "turn around, don't drown" as flooding continues. TxDOT says that as little as six inches of rain is enough to float some vehicles, and that drivers should never try to walk or swim through flooded roads.

If your car stalls in water, leave it and safely move to higher ground.
