DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) — Denton residents rallied on the lawn of city hall today amid the passage of a bill that overturned a city of Denton vote to ban fracking.

Demonstrators from the group "Frack Free Denton" say House Bill 40 calls attention to the state of democracy in Texas. They are asking the public to attend a city council meeting on the issue this Tuesday at 6:30pm.

The City of Denton issued a statement earlier this month saying it can no longer enforce the fracking ban voters approved seven months ago, citing new state law that limits their power and voids the ban.

Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation that would prevent cities like Denton from banning a wide variety of drilling practices.

Gov. Abbott authorized fracking in Denton; voters didn't. Where do YOU stand? Weigh in on the CBS 11 Facebook page.
