LITTLE ELM (CBS11) - It was one of the first lessons of the school year for students at the new Braswell High School in Little Elm – do not walk across U.S. Highway 380.

However, not even five minutes after class was dismissed, a handful of students were spotted running out in front of cars crossing the congested highway.

"Our goal has been to limit as much foot traffic as possible," said Denton ISD spokesperson Mario Zavala.

This year Denton ISD, the second-fastest-growing district in North Texas, opened two new schools off  U.S. Highway 380, Braswell High School and nearby Bell Elementary School.

The district is providing busing for every student in the district who lives on the opposite side of the highway as their school, even if that means busing students a few hundred yards.

"I don't even want to cross this road myself as an adult," said parent Bernabas Akporahe.

Little Elm police officers along with Denton County deputies helped direct traffic Monday for the two new schools.

According to Little Elm Police, daily traffic on the town's six-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 380 has increased by more 8,000 vehicles during the past three years.
