17-Year-Old Denton ISD Student Dies After Workout With Cross Country Team

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A 17-year-old Denton ISD student has died after a workout with his cross country team Thursday morning, the district said.

Police said they responded to a call about an unconscious person at South Lakes Park on Hobson Lane at around 8 a.m. Arriving officers found the 17-year-old "unconscious and unresponsive" and began administering CPR.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Denton ISD identified the student as Dylan Dorrell of Guyer High School.

Police said they will be working with the district to make crisis counselors available for those affected by the death.

"Our hearts go out to the entire DISD family, as well as the student, and their friends and family," police said in a statement.

Denton ISD released a statement that read in part:

It is with great sadness that we share the news of a sudden loss to our Guyer High School family. Dylan Dorrell, a member of the Class of 2021, passed away this morning following a workout with the cross-country team. We ask that you please keep Dylan's family in your hearts and minds as they struggle with his loss.

Tragedies of this magnitude are difficult to overcome, but the Guyer family has proven to be resilient time and time again and we will support each other in dealing with this unexpected loss.
