Crews Begin Removing Vehicles From Scene Of Deadly Dallas Crane Collapse
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - It took nearly four months, but on Monday morning vehicles trapped at the scene of a deadly crane collapse were lifted into the sky above Dallas and slowly lowered to the ground.
The cars and trucks are headed back to their owners after being stuck inside the Elan City Lights parking garage since the crane collapse.
Crews began working around 8 a.m. and one-by-one used a crane to remove vehicles from the roof of the garage. Once down on the ground the vehicles were loaded onto a flatbed tow truck.
The extraction of the vehicles is just another step toward reuniting residents at the damaged apartment building with their property.
The Elan City Lights apartment building was declared unsafe after the deadly crane collapse on June 9, forcing tenants to evacuate quickly leaving a lot behind -- including their vehicles.
Crews will work from the top floor of the garage and proceed down to ground level. The vehicles will be photographed and transported to what apartment complex officials call a "secure storage facility" where owners can claim them.
The process will be slow but officials say they hope to recover around 10 to 12 vehicles per day.
In a Facebook post, Elan City Lights management also says it is finalizing plans and a schedule to resume the recovery of residents' belongings from the remaining parts of the building.
