Damaging Storms Hit North Texas
DALLAS (AP) - Severe thunderstorms packing winds of up to 90 mph tore through the Dallas-Fort Worth area, causing widespread tree damage and leaving up to 125,000 electric utility customers in the dark.
The storms struck the North Texas area just as commuters were gearing up for the afternoon rush hour.
The fast-moving storms left widespread damage and power outages as winds downed utility poles and tree limbs up to 6 inches in diameter. A brick wall toppled onto parked cars in Fort Worth's historic Stockyards, and a limb crushed an unoccupied car in eastern Fort Worth.
The electric utility Oncor reported 125,000 customers lost power in the immediate aftermath of the storms.
The storm was part of a cold front that dropped North Texas temperatures up to 20 degrees in 30 minutes.
