DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — Dallas police have opened a criminal investigation into an alleged domestic violence assault incident involving Johnny Manziel.

The department announced Friday detectives are investigating to determine whether criminal charges will be filed against the Cleveland Browns quarterback. Police opened the investigation after receiving a complaint of a domestic violence assault that happened on Jan. 30, which lists Manziel as the suspect.

Fort Worth police deployed a helicopter to search for the former Texas A&M quarterback after the alleged assault that Manziel's ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, says started in Dallas and ended at her apartment in Fort Worth. A judge recently granted Crowley a protective order, which says Manziel must stay away from her until at least Feb. 3, 2018.
