DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - After recent flooding in the area, the City of Dallas is expanding its city worker emergency alert system and enhancing the emergency notification system for residents.

Citizens and employees are of critical real-time information during floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters. The City's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) provides information and mass notifications by cell phone and text messaging.

Adam Traylor, a City of Dallas emergency management specialist, said, "Timely and effective communication is the essential component of emergency awareness, management and preparedness."

As it stands, the City sends messages to the cell phones of some 3,000 city workers. But soon, almost all workers will get the emergency alerts.

The workers, consisting primarily of specialized response teams, decision making leaders and emergency operations personnel, are notified to respond to a scene or assemble in the City Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to begin coordinating any support needed.

Residents and businesses signing up for DallasAlert are notified about information and necessary actions that are needed to preserve life and safety. The program has been enhanced to help people without a landline in emergency situations.
