IRVING (105.3 THE FAN) - The Dallas Cowboys have placed defensive lineman Josh Brent on reserve/retired list.

The Cowboys activated Brent from the reserve/suspended list in November 2014 following his conviction from a car crash that killed teammate and friend Jerry Brown Jr. in December 2012.

"He's going to retire from the NFL." said Coach Jason Garrett at a Friday press conference. "He's going to focus on life, rather than being a professional football player."

This marks the second retirement for Brent dating back to 2013, when he left football while facing charges.

"He's worked very hard to find some normalcy in his life. I admire him in many ways." Garrett added.

In January 2014, Brent was found guilty of intoxicated manslaughter. While Brent could have faced up to 20 years in prison for the incident, the judge sentenced him to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation for the accident. He was also fined $10,000.

Brent was released from prison in June 2014 and reported to a rehab facility. He worked on both alcohol responsibility as well as the emotional devastation he faced after causing the death of his friend.

In September 2014, the NFL reached a decision on his punishment and suspended Brent for the first 10 games of the 2014 NFL season. The NFL also mandated that Brent can have no further altercation with the law and he can face banishment from the NFL for any alcohol-related conduct.

The Jones family has remained supportive of Brent throughout, including helping him find an off-season job while dealing with the second of his drunk-driving incidents, the first of which occurred in college and was part of the reason he slipped to the seventh round in his draft class.
