CORPUS CHRISTI (AP) — The interim police chief in Corpus Christi will be promoted to replace Chief Floyd Simpson, who died in a May motorcycle wreck.

City Manager Ron Olson on Monday named Assistant Chief Mike Markle for the permanent position, pending final approval from the Corpus Christi City Council.

Markle, with more than 26 years in law enforcement, was among six finalists interviewed over the weekend for the police chief's job.

Simpson was off-duty when he died in a crash while riding his motorcycle.
