DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - CBS 11's J.D. Miles was recognized with the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas Media Award Monday during United Way's annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon.

United Way's Media Award winner recognizes a public figure who draws attention to social issues, and the needs of people served by United Way and its non-profit partners.

During the past year, the United Way says Miles has been a real community champion for important causes.

He has highlighted domestic violence prevention efforts, with a story about the innovative SafeNight app allowing donors to provide shelter for victims in immediate need through their smartphones.

He has spotlighted the issue of sex trafficking, profiling a local survivor whose story proved influential in recent changes in the Texas Legislature, resulting in new laws clearing criminal history records for certain victims of trafficking.

He's also reported on the need for higher standards and training requirements and caregiver to child ratios in local daycare and pre-k settings.
