Man Survives Scary Ride Over Edge Of Austin Parking Garage

AUSTIN, TX (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Austin Fire Department responded to a call where a sport utility vehicle was dangling over the edge of a parking garage near Sixth Street and Congress Avenue.

In a photo released by the Austin Fire Department the SUV could be seen with roof damage and hanging nose-up off the side of the garage. Officials said the SUV was a 2004 Toyota 4Runner with an estimated weight of 5000 pounds.

Officials told CBS Austin the driver was was able to escape the SUV uninjured and that no roads -- only an alley -- were closed.  They said wires were holding onto one wheel of the SUV keeping it from falling. Gas was also leaking from it Friday afternoon.

The 24-year-old driver of the SUV told officials he tried to pull into a parking space and couldn't stop.

Despite his attempts to stop the SUV from moving, it continued rolling "at a slow rate of speed, pushing through the wire barricade and flipping end-over-end and finally the wire barricade caught it."

The driver credits his seat-belt for saving his life. He told officials that when the SUV came to a stop, a bystander helped him from the it to the 8th floor.

According to CBS Austin the call came into police at 2:39 p.m. today.

Officials expect it to take several hours to remove the SUV.
