DALLAS (CBS11) – After being lost and sealed for more than 60 years, the Commemorative Air Force cracked open a pair of metal drums Tuesday to reveal the World War II era finds inside.

The unsealing took place at the Dallas Executive Airport.

The two drums were donated to the CAF as time capsules from World War II.

Once opened, two Norden bomb sights were discovered inside.

"We know that this is the type of container that contained aircraft parts so we knew that we were going to pull something interesting out of these containers," said CAF Curator Keegan Chetwynd.

The bomb sights were devices mounted on the nose of bomber planes and used to pinpoint targets to drop bombs on.

At the time they were not only top secret, but state-of-the-art as well.

Present at the unsealing was, John "Lucky" Luckadoo a former B-17 pilot and World War II veteran.

He said seeing the bomb sights unsealed brought back many vivid memories.

He said he hopes they serve as an educational tool to teach younger generations of all the sacrifices made by those who fought in World War II.

"Many lives were paid to ensure that you enjoy the freedoms that you enjoy today is something that should not be forgotten," said Luckadoo.
