LAREDO (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Today U.S. and Mexican authorities are searching for suspects after a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) helicopter came under fire Friday evening.

The helicopter was patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border near the banks of the Rio Grande when several bullets were fired into the aircraft and its motor-blade. The pilot was able to make an emergency landing with no injuries.

Authorities say the shots were fired from the Mexican side of the border. The shooting scene is an area notorious for narcotics smuggling and other illegal crossings.

The CBP statement says a coordinated investigation and search for suspects on both sides of the Rio Grande is ongoing.
