FARMERS BRANCH (CBSDFW.COM) - Community support for local police and firefighters today turned into a huge show of support for blood donation.

Dozens of people donated at the Farmers Branch Community Recreation Center as part of the City's Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.

"I think everybody needs to do more, to give back. That's why I'm here today," said blood donor Edward Flores.

For 10 years straight, the Farmers Branch Police Department and Fire Department duke it out over top prize for blood donation. But the friendly competition turned a bit more serious this year after the ambush killing of five police officers on July 7 in Downtown Dallas.

"There were over 400 units of blood used for those shooting victims. It depleted the stock of blood needed, so we're trying to help build that stock back up for anybody who needs the blood," said David Hale, Farmers Branch deputy chief.

The Battle of the Badges Blood Drive continues tomorrow at the Rec Center. Anyone who wants to donate is welcome to.
