DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Don't mess with Texas, or the American flag. One Bedford woman learned that lesson the hard way. There are many patriotic displays in a neighborhood on Blue Jay Court in Bedford but one display -- which several neighbors believe is not so patriotic -- has residents up in arms.

One home owner had an American flag covering a dirt pile -- next to it -- a cross with the message RIP in hell.

"It's a very emotional thing, especially during these times," said Parry Hicks whose home proudly displays an American flag. "My hearts breaking over this whole ordeal. I hope whoever does this gets some help," said Hicks.

Neighbors made their feelings known to homeowner Kelly McAnally.  She said the flag was only being used as an extra tarp to keep her $200 pile of gravel from washing away this morning.

"It was just part of the tarps... I mean it was inside the garage I grabbed it and -- my goodness -- people have no life," commented McAnally. She also called it a Halloween decoration.

After many questions from neighbors and CBS 11, the homeowner picked up the flag.

"I drove by and wanted to see it for myself. To display it in a manner such as that is deplorable," commented Bedford resident Jackie Cutlip.

While CBS 11 was at the home, Bedford Police were called and things became tense between the homeowner and officers -- and again with neighbors.

"I'm not here to argue I'm just here to thank you for picking it up," said Hicks. "Well it's about to go down the shredder," replied McAnally.

The flag may now be off the dirt pile, but it will be awhile before the dust settles in a neighborhood that by many indications never wants to see this again.
