DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A man whose eye was gouged out by a random assault, according to police, is shocked and angry that his attacker is already back on the street.
"From the eye to the brain 'handicapped man' I'm going to kill you," were the words victim Landi Dyess said a mad man kept saying after slamming him on the ground and plunging his fingers into his eye. "He went through the eyeball I can't describe to you the pain -- the fear, the nausea -- everything was so unbelievably surreal," said Dyess.
The attack happened last week after Dyess parked his white van outside his apartment off Preston and Frankford in Dallas.
Dyess stabbed Shawne Forrest, 31, in self defense. "He was definitely an emissary of Satan... he wasn't a human being," said Dyess, who underwent four hours of surgery at a Plano hospital. The former bounty hunter is now recovering at an undisclosed location and carrying a handgun.
"If I am breathing I will have a firearm on me. I will not be subject to this anymore," he said. "The only reason I wanted to do this interview is to warn other people."
Dyess said he doesn't believe Forrest was on drugs. He said he was told he was being targeted because he had a handicap sign in his van. Dyess can't believe a judge would set a $25,000 bond, which Forrest posted for aggravated assault.
Dyess insisted it was attempted murder. "I'm terrified this man was trying to murder me. That's what he said. I will survive this -- how I don't know."
The judge who signed off on the bond did not respond but a veteran attorney told CBS11 News it seemed light considering the circumstances.
As for Dyess, who is self employed as a locksmith and a minister, he's hoping someone will come forward to help with medical bills after his life was shattered by this bizarre, random attack.
