Around Town: Texas Steel Drums

Follow KRLD: Facebook | Twitter

Sometimes a song can transport you to another place and time like the sound of steel drums always sounds like a vacation in the islands.

A North Texas man brings that Caribbean sound to parties and schools with his steel drums, or "pans" as the cool kids call them, that were handmade in Austin.

"Usually when I play live I tell people I blame it all on Jimmy Buffett" said Charlie Duhon of Steel Drum Music DFW.

Charlie literally taught himself to play and started doing some shows around town for retirement homes and schools for free.  The word spread and his steel drum music business took off.

"One thing led to another and I started getting phone calls and doing pool parties.  Now I'm booked at over 120 gigs average a year" Charlie added.

He has two CD's out and travels with his pans all over Texas bringing the Caribbean sound to land locked partiers.
