DECATUR (CBSDFW.COM) – She was left badly injured on the side of a road back in late June. Now a mare named "Stella" who was rescued by the Humane Society of North Texas is doing a lot better.
On Wednesday she was detached from the sling that had been keeping her upright for nearly 3 weeks. After the straps of the sling were removed "Stella" was finally able to stand on her own again.
Ann Barnes, the executive director of the HSNT said, "It took a long time for Stella to get into this condition so it's going to take months for Stella to get healthy again."
The horse was found emaciated with fire ant bites, open wounds, and clear signs of abuse. Whoever hurt her is still on the loose as investigators continue to search for those responsible.
In the meantime "Stella" is showing big signs of improvements.
Barnes added, "It's awesome she is an amazing horse to be able to live through this," about her recovery so far.
Her care takers hope she will be able to go outside and walk on her own sometime within the next four weeks.
HSNT is now offering $2,500 in reward money to anyone with information leading to those responsible for abusing "Stella".
