COLMESNEIL, Texas (AP) -- Six people were killed when two vehicles crashed head-on on a two-lane East Texas highway.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reports the crash happened about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 69 about two miles south of Colmesneil. DPS Trooper Stephanie Davis says identities were being withheld until families could be notified.

Davis says that even as nightfall approached, investigators were still trying to determine how the crash happened on the highway, which remained closed for five hours before reopening. She called the case ``an extremely complex crash investigation.''

The crash site is about 95 miles northeast of Houston.
