TERRELL (CBSDFW.COM) - Folks across North Texas woke up to temperatures in the teens on Thursday morning. But imagine spending the chilly nights without any heat. That is what some apartment residents in Terrell had to do on Wednesday, and that was not even their first night dealing with this issue.
The Virginia Ann Apartments have not had heat since Sunday, and much of that time has been spent with temperatures around and below the freezing mark. Residents at the apartment complex said that it has not been much different than just sleeping outside.
The Hollis family does not want the risk of running a space heater overnight, so they and their neighbors all bundle up with blankets.
An employee in the apartment complex's leasing office said that they are working to get the heat back on Thursday, but this has not been an simple problem to fix. Even a temporary boiler stopped working because of water pipe leaks. Work crews were at the complex late Wednesday night and again early Thursday morning.
According to city officials, this complex has been plagued with problems.
Just last month, the complex was cited for a health and safety hazard concerning raw sewage on the property. The city is leveraging fines, hoping to put pressure on the property's out-of-state owners to come up with permanent solutions.
Attempts to reach those owners for comment have been unsuccessful.
