3 Texas Army Posts To Lose Almost 5,000 Soldiers

DALLAS (AP) — Three Army posts in Texas will lose almost 5,000 troops over the next two budget years under a newly announced Army cost-saving plan aimed at reducing its active-duty force by 40,000 troops.

Army officials say even more cuts could be in the offing if Congress and the White House cannot avert another round of budget cuts.

The cuts announced Thursday in Washington would reduce Army in personnel in Texas by 4,898 by 2017.

Fort Hood, the Army's largest post, would lose 3.350 troops, or 9 percent of its personnel. Fort Bliss would lose 1,219 troops, about 5 percent of its personnel. Fort Sam Houston would lose 329 troops, 6 percent of its personnel.
