DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Two families are mourning the loss of two little girls who were killed on Monday night in Dallas. They died in crashes that were completely separate. Police are continuing to investigate the incidents but, at this point, they believe that they were both accidents.
The first crash happened at around 8:00 p.m. at the intersection of Fair Oaks Avenue and Pineland Drive. That is when a driver slammed into a mother and her 7-year-old daughter who were in a crosswalk. The mother was transported to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition. However, the little girl died. She was later identified as Ning Et.
Investigators will likely file a grand jury referral for criminal negligent homicide, but there has been no arrest or official charges in this case. The driver did stop at the scene, but their name has not been released.
It was about 15 minutes later on the other side of town that a second crash happened in the 3600 block of Dawes Drive. A minivan was backing out of a driveway when it struck 2-year-old Monica Navarro. The small toddler was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead.
Investigators said that the driver was not a blood relative of the child, but did live in the same home.
There are no charges pending in this case. "It appears to be an accident," said Lt. Danny Gallegos with the Dallas Police Department. "The van did not see the child and, unfortunately, backed up, striking the child."
Authorities noted that the minivan was not equipped with a rear camera. But regardless, the young girl was struck near a front wheel. Since the incident occurred in a private driveway, it is being handled by child abuse detectives, and is not being treated as a regular car crash. No charges have been filed.
Police do not suspect that alcohol was a factor in either incident.
