HALTOM CITY (CBSDFW.COM) - A Haltom High School student was arrested for bringing a realistic air gun replica of a Beretta 92 handgun to class on the first day of school.

Haltom City Police say a student told a School Resource Officer at Haltom High School he'd seen another student with a weapon.

The SRO notified dispatch and along with other officers, found the student in a classroom.

The student was detained without incident and admitted to having a weapon. Police removed the weapon and arrested the student and took him to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center on the charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Police say it appears the student brought the weapon for his personal protection.

The investigation continues.
