Zuckerberg, Wife Announce $25 Million Donation To Fight Ebola On Facebook

MENLO PARK (CBS SF) - Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg says he and his wife Priscilla are donating $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation to fight the spread of the Ebola virus.

Making the announcement on his Facebook Page, Zuckerberg said the fight against Ebola is at a critical turning point with the potential to infect a million people if not quickly addressed.

"We need to get Ebola under control in the near term so that it doesn't spread further and become a long term global health crisis that we end up fighting for decades at large scale, like HIV or polio," he wrote.  "We believe our grant is the quickest way to empower the CDC and the experts in this field to prevent this outcome."

According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of the 50 top philanthropists, Zuckerberg and his wife topped the 2013 list with a total donation of 18 million shares of Facebook stock, valued at more than $970 million, to Silicon Valley nonprofits.
