Suspected Walnut Creek Burglar Requires Surgery For Swallowed Ring

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) – A suspected burglar who crashed into a BART fence in Walnut Creek last week had to undergo surgery to remove a wedding ring he allegedly stole.

Walnut Creek police said officers responding to a burglary at a home on Walnut Boulevard on the morning of March 31st spotted the suspect's car.

Police said the suspect, later identified as Joel Steffensen of Martinez, led them on a brief chase before crashing into a fence next to the BART tracks near Walden and Jones streets. The suspect was arrested after a brief foot chase.

Following the crash, police said paramedics took Steffensen to the hospital for x-rays. A wedding ring was discovered in the suspect's esophagus. Doctors performed surgery to remove the ring.

Steffensen, a parolee, remained in custody Wednesday morning.
