No Tsunami Warning After Magnitude 6.3 Quake Strikes Off Coast Of Japan

(CBS SF) -- An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off the coast of Northern Japan, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's automated seismograph alert network.

The earthquake struck around 12:35 p.m. Saturday local time (7:35 p.m. Friday Pacific Time) in the Pacific Ocean, about 96 miles east northeast of Hachinohe, at a depth of 8.4 miles. The epicenter is more than 400 miles north northeast of Tokyo.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no threat of a tsunami.
