Modern Day Amelia Earhart To Trace Namesake's Planned Flight Path

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A woman who carries the same name as the most famous female aviator is paying tribute to the original Amelia Earhart by circling the globe after departing from Oakland Thursday.

Amelia Rose Earhart – that is her real name – will follow the same flight plan that her namesake took in 1937. The original Earhart also departed from Oakland, and disappeared forever after her signal was lost on approach to New Zealand.

The younger Earhart quit her job as a weather and traffic reporter in Denver to get ready for the 28,000 mile journey aboard a single-engine aircraft. The trip will take a little less than three weeks and cover 14 countries.
