Man Fatally Struck By Caltrain In Palo Alto

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) -- Caltrain is still experiencing delays of more than an hour in the northbound direction and more than 40 minutes in the southbound direction following a fatal collision in Palo Alto Wednesday evening.

Southbound train 264 reported the initial incident near Charleston Avenue at 5:40 p.m., according to Caltrain officials. The deceased appears to be an adult male, but his age remains unknown.

The involved train has been released from the scene and has dropped its passengers off where they can be picked up by the next southbound train.

This is the 7th fatality this year, according to Caltrain officials. Caltrain averages 14 fatalities a year, and 90 percent of those are eventually ruled a suicide.

Caltrain has launched a "There is help" signage program and web site with resources for despondent individuals and those seeking to learn more about mental illness and suicide. The web site can be found at www.caltrain.com/thereishelp.
