Lawmakers Consider Creating UC Center To Study Gun Violence

SACRAMENTO (CBS) — Lawmakers are considering a bill that would fund a new University of California center to study gun violence and prevention.

According to CBS Sacramento, the statistics are clear—guns kill 30,000 Americans a year. But UC Davis violence prevention researcher Garen Wintemute says no one knows for certain why people kill or how those deaths could be preventable.

"Studying firearm violence is no different than studying cancer heart disease or motor vehicle trauma," Wintemute said.

He's one of a few researchers in the country who studies gun violence prevention. Right now, it's out of an unmarked building in Sacramento, but he's being considered to lead a proposed UC firearm violence research center in California.
