Day-Long Internet Outage For City Of Oakland Caused By AT&T Work Crew

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- The city of Oakland's Internet service was restored Friday after being down for nearly 24 hours, because of fiber damage caused by AT&T construction crews.

The city's Internet connection went down at about 2:44 p.m. Thursday as the construction crews were replacing manholes along Broadway, according to AT&T spokesman Leland Kim.

Staff e-mails and the city's website were inaccessible during the outage.

As of about 2:30 p.m., technicians had restored the cable and service is now running normally, Kim said.

Construction crews will continue replacing manholes in the area and will continue to monitor for any alarms with technicians available to respond to as needed, Kim said.

While city police found themselves without access to Internet or e-mail, crucial public safety services such as police radio and computer aided dispatch systems were not affected.
