Inmate Found Dead In Martinez Jail, Apparently Hanged With Bedsheet

MARTINEZ (CBS SF) -- A 38-year-old male inmate who was being held at the Martinez Detention Facility died Saturday.

At 4:32 p.m. a deputy found the inmate inside his room, hanging from a bed sheet, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy notified jail medical staff and began CPR. Medical staff took over and began life-saving measures. The fire department and an ambulance also responded, sheriff's officials said.

The inmate, who was a Walnut Creek resident, was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's office has not identified the inmate.

The incident is being investigated by the district attorney's office as well as the sheriff's office.
