Safeway Worker Fatally Shot At American Canyon Store Identified; Suspect At Large

AMERICAN CANYON (CBS SF) -- Authorities in Napa County on Sunday have identified the Safeway employee killed earlier in the day in the parking lot at a store in American Canyon Sunday.

The shooting happened shortly after noon at the Safeway store on West American Canyon Road. The shooter fled the scene.

The Napa County Coroner's Office identified the American Canyon Safeway employee who was fatally shot as 18-year-old Nathan Gabriel Garza.

Authorities also announced that, contrary to some misinformed reports on the internet, detectives have no evidence suggesting Garza was killed shortly after asking the suspect or suspects to wear a mask. Authorities also said that a man was arrested shortly after the shooting incident, but said the arrest was not related to the incident.

Napa County Sheriff's detectives and American Canyon police are working to identify the shooter, who is still at large.

The public was asked to avoid the area during the investigation.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Napa County Sheriff's Office investigations line at (707)253-4591.
