CHP: Driver Flees After Striking, Killing Pedestrian Crossing I-580

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A pedestrian was reportedly trying to cross Interstate Highway 580 Sunday morning when he was struck and killed by a car near the border of San Leandro and Hayward, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded at 12:10 a.m. on a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision in the eastbound lanes of Highway 580 near 150th Avenue, CHP officers said.

Officers arrived to find a male pedestrian blocking the eastbound lanes. A witness told officers the pedestrian was trying to cross the highway when he was struck by a white vehicle.

The vehicle fled the scene, CHP officers said.

A Sig-alert was issued at 12:29 a.m. and all lanes reopened at 2:51 a.m.

CHP is investigating the hit-and-run and are asking anyone with information to contact Castro Valley CHP at (510) 581-9028.
