Woman, Child Injured When Boat Suddenly Catches Fire In Delta

BETHEL ISLAND (CBS SF) – A child and a woman were hospitalized after suffering burn injuries in a sudden boat fire on Saturday in the Bethel Island area of eastern Contra Costa County, according to fire officials.

East Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews responded at 4:44 p.m. Saturday to the fire near the fueling dock of the Sugar Barge Resort in the 4500 block of Willow Road.

Fire officials said the blaze was already out by the time firefighters arrived at the scene. A child and a woman who were on the boat were found with burn injuries.

The child was transported to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch while the woman was flown by a medical helicopter that landed at Piper and Sugar Barge roads and took her to UC Davis Medical Center's burn unit.

The fire also damaged the boat. The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation into what caused the blaze, fire officials said.
